Becoming Maize: a re-storyation project is an intergenerational project between Tess Durham, a young non-binary farmer/field poet and Barbara Brown, an established artist, between a small plot of land and a handful of seeds. What began as a vague desire grew into a dynamic collaboration. A single gesture grew into a community gathering that spouted creativity not only in the field but between the people involved.
Through photography, poetry, reflections, and observations, this project reveals how maize or corn can open space for connection, curiosity, and wonder, inviting you into the magic and mystery.
Becoming Maize invites you into the field to witness a quiet unfolding of a season spent growing corn.

A Storied Recipe emerged from a residency in Prince Edward County with Alchemy Artist Residency. Alchemy brings artists together to make art and food, building community through the shared experience of meals. With a focus on a single recipe: kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon buns), made collaboratively with Liz Nilsson, from Ireland and raised in Sweden, and Adrianna Ciocci, from New York City, whose Swedish grandmother baked a similar version. From over 200 images captured during the making of the buns, we added shared family memories and traditions connected to the recipe, the three of us collaborated remotely to produce a richly textured artist book, A Storied Recipe: Kanelbullar / Swedish Cinnamon Buns.

Images Made with Plants: On the Nature of Impermanence is an artistic inquiry about a particular place and a way of knowing it through making anthotype images without the lens of a camera.
Gardening and photography are two interests around which I organize my days. Given that combination in a jungle setting of Costa Rica gave rise to the practice of making plant based imagery employing the plants themselves. Harvesting the freshest blooms of the day, grinding them up, making an emulsion seems a crazy thing to do. Yet, in a jungle setting where plant growth is exponential with exceptional potential, it is a method of transforming an aspect of the place in a very human way.

laid bare is an offering of love to fields and flowers. It is a song of gratitude for nature’s gifts of light and shadow – as it passes through the last of winter’s dark night; shimmers in the alchemy of summer air and lingers in the luscious golden light of fall.
In this small volume, we weave together seven images and seven poems to celebrate the world of flowers and plants and to reflect on how they touch our lives and bring joy throughout the seasons.
laid bare is the second creative project I have undertaken with Eco Poet Diane Perazzo. In 2023, we previously worked together on the art and poetry exhibition, Sowing the Future: When Food becomes Connection.
